Who doesn't want to live in the Golden state? But it's not all sun, surf and sand. There are things you can do before you arrive to help smooth your transition, especially when you're buying a house

I don't need to tell you that you'll probably need a car But there are neighborhoods where you can minimize the need for private transportation. Luckily you have a native Californian to help find them.
GPS will become your best friend. I have friend who moved here in 1996 and he jokes that he was lost for the first two years of his life in LA. It is a big city and it will take you a while to get a feel for the layout of the place. Just remember if you're on the Westside the mountains are to your north (you can usually see the mountains) and the Ocean is to your west.
DMV appointments. In some smaller cities it may seem unnecessary to make an appointment to visit the DMV but here in LA it is an absolute must. You can go on-line here and make one. It will not illiminate the wait but it will radically reduce it (and also give you a heads up on any materials you may need to bring). I also suggest finding one of the smaller DMV offices like Culver City or Venice as the line will usually be shorter
